September 30, 2005 -- Fifty years passed, and Jimmy should have been awarded an Oscar, but all he ever received were two nominations. JAMES DEAN -- young rebel, passionate actor, American icon. These are the images we remember of the rising young star, whose life tragically ended in a car accident on September 30, 1955. These are also the images that famed celebrity photographer Sanford Roth captured in over 1,560 pictures of Jimmy a few months before his death, up to and including the scene of the fatal accident.
Jimmy was best personified as the "Rebel Without a Cause". Though nominated for Oscars for "East of Eden" and "Giant", he would nonchalantly say "Success -- so what." Yet, his closest friend, noted screenwriter Bill Bast, who, along with Sanford Roth, had dinner with Jimmy the night before the accident, said years ago that, despite his "rebel" image, Jimmy really did want an Oscar. The dream now is to keep the hopes of an Oscar for Jimmy alive in the hearts of all his fans for the next 50 years, after the 50th anniversary in 2005.
For the 50th anniversary, we posted some of those photos for Jimmy fans to view for their own enjoyment and to freely download for their own personal use. We still plan to release other photos for free downloading in the future, so please visit often. Also, as part of the ongoing Oscar for Jimmy "campaign", we will try to catalog all the photos here, with captions by Mr. Bill Bast. The photos will be divided into categories, such as those below.
